The Sathya Sai Schools are a private international network of philanthropically-funded schools providing free education. The Schools foster unity of the three major aspects of the human personality—thought, word, deed—and that turning the mind toward God, Goodness, or conscience results in good character.

The human values espoused by the Schools include, among others, cooperation, dedication, forbearance, morality, responsibility, reverence, virtue, discipline, acceptance, devotion, and kindness. The Schools highlight the five overarching values subsuming all the rest: truth, right action, peace, love, and nonviolence. These human values are applicable to all ethnicities, races, religions, cultures, nationalities.

Education in human values as modeled by the Sathya Sai Schools is based on values as inherent human qualities to be drawn out of students, rather than information to be acquired. This is the concept of educare (Latin, to draw out). Human values are consistently integrated into traditional subject matter disciplines. This promotes use of academic knowledge by students for the welfare of all. Education in human values includes focus on the human spirit, that is, life in a deeper sense, which includes, but does not overemphasize, preparing for a living economically.

The Institutes of Sathya Sai Education are teacher education institutes with commitment to the same human values. The Institutes are located adjacent to Sathya Sai Schools. The primary function of the Institutes is to facilitate learning experiences in which teachers self-construct knowledge about the human values, the importance of acting in concert with the values, and the means by which the curriculum can be taught from a human values perspective.

Sathya Sai Schools promote development of spirituality within students by the study and fostering of inherent human values, and by an ecumenical use of prayer and devotional singing or chanting and meditation. Sathya Sai Schools teach the unity of all religions. The human values promoted are harmonious with basic tenets of all religions and with spirituality, requiring no subscription to any specific religious doctrine. Teachers are expected to exemplify unity in precept and practice of human values in their personal lives to foster more effectively student awareness of and commitment to the values. The children are encouraged by ecumenical prayer and devotional singing at school to practice the religion of their families. Songs and prayers at school are chosen from the religions of the children’s families. For example, the school in Thailand utilizes primarily Buddhist prayers and chants since the local population is predominately Buddhist. The school in Zambia utilizes primarily Christian prayers and songs since the local population is predominately Christian. Minority religious backgrounds from the locales are honored.

In the emerging literature about the Sathya Sai Schools published by the Schools or Institutes, parent satisfaction comments in writing are utilized as indicators of children’s putting human values into practice in daily life. Parents comment frequently that their children are calmer, more considerate and compassionate. While objective measures of academic achievement are emerging, one successful objective measure of Sathya Sai School student academic achievement is in Africa. The national press of Zambia dubbed the Sathya Sai School there, established in 1992, the "miracle school" due to its 100% pass rate on national exams for the past several years by seventh, ninth, and twelfth grade students who had dropped out of other schools.
